| Here is a great recap from last night's Phily show! It was a huge success with a large turn out! - Quote :
- Here's a great recap from ncwannabe from CV
Okay, here goes:
You know Jesse and Sean come out first, then A & Q. Then the first strains of "Here You Come Again" start and then he starts singing while still offstage. Finally he walks in and Gah! He looks stunningly beautiful. His hair looks great, he's got the striped shirt on and great-fitting jeans. Plus the sandals so we got to see his toes!
He sings the first 3 songs pretty much right in a row, then stops to banter some. As he just begins his banter, he sees some folks just walking into the venue. He says hello. Tells them he's talking to them. He calls the woman up to the front, asks why she's late. She says she got lost. As she's walking up to him, she sees people she knows along the way in the audience and says hello. He's asking her how he knows these people. After some back and forth, she says she knows these people and the friend she came with from the internet. He says that's dangerous LOL. Finally, he tells her to get her friend and he spots two empty seats up front in the Pit! He tells them to sit there!
Goes into Q getting a letter from a fan about him gaining weight and what not. (as an aside, my friend who had a M&G tonight said he mentioned the letter in the M&G. Wasn't too complimentary to the writer of the letter and said they "might" read it. Guess they decided to do it. Supposedly they knew that the author of the letter was to be in the audience last night which is why they decided to read it. Stupid person! Anyway, he was reading parts of the letter that said she went to CU and saw this hawt, sexy singer and she was wondering where that person was. That Clay's fans make many sacrifices for him, and he only has to make 2 -- krispy kremes and mac & cheese. Also that he was headed for an early heart attack or trying to keep up with his dork image. Like I said, stupid person. But he was laughing hysterically reading it. Oh, then he sucked in his gut big time and puffed out his chest. It was hilarious. Oh, and he explained he forgot his Tshirt and he borrowed one from Sean, the drummer. He called Sean out front and stood beside him. Clay is probably more than a foot taller than him. So, he said the Tshirt was very snug (tee hee!).
He sang so very beautifully. In great voice. Just filling up the venue with beautiful sound. Anglea sang IWKWLI with him tonight. Maybe they'll switch it off between her and Q now.
M&G friend said he told them the TV medley was his fav. Tonight he had a few clips of other shows on a cd that his sound guy Fern played, just to see if folks knew what they were. He seems to have a great time singing that medley. Was dancing and letting loose.
Can't remember too much else right now about first half. oops, coming back. How could I forget. There was this platform type wall around the Pit. Well, he starts walking out on the thing. He circles the whole way around on the thing. I think the first time he did it was on "Everytime You Go Away". He stopped very close to me. I just looked up at him mesmorized. Gah. He did it 3 times. On TWYMMF and then again but darn if I know for sure which other song. "Because You Loved Me"?
Oh, "These Open Arms" was great. Again, his voice was just soaring. Truly beautiful. I Love this song!
Second half begins -- Without You is just incredible. Again, so soaring. Gah. MOAM and "A Thousand Days" just wonderful as well.
Does schtick about getting a way to do more uptempo songs. Says he gave Jesse list for what he wanted to do. Said when he told him he wanted to do sexyback, Jesse laughed for a half hour. Sang TWYMMF and truly does know the words. But, he joked by saying he doesn't know the words cause for the last two weeks he's been interviewed by the FBI and didn't have time to learn them. Joked about the airplane thing a few times. Said he got in trouble for his hand over Kelly's mouth, his toe on someone's armrest. So, it's only a matter of time before his butt shows up somewhere LOL!
Oh, side note. In friend's M&G told them dogs not along. Jaime is allergic. Thought it was Jaime. Anyway, he said Raleigh climbed into his suitcase and whined. Said it broke his heart. (awwwwwwww, all together now.)
Um, classics medley was awesome. sooooo fun. He did the whipping motion for sexy back. Lots of skin!!!!! wWohoo for Sean's little tee shirt! Really dancing around on OPP. Great tractor stuff -- driving motion and hitching up the jeans.
Oh, M&G picture is him driving on a tractor. it's priceless. Said in M&G it was his Grandfather's tractor. LOL
"Lover All Alone" was stunning. Could have heard a pin drop in the venue. stunning. stunning. stunning. stunning. Am I getting the point across? It was stunning. beautiful.
Once again dedicated "Because You Loved Me" to us. Kind of emphasized the line for all the wrongs that you made right one time. (awwwwww again). Then, at end where he's been singing "and you believed" he said instead something like "you made me believe." (awwwwwwwww again and again and again).
Finally, it was over. Way too soon. It goes by very, very quickly. It was totally awesome. Last thing to share. M&G friend said she asked him about his fans. About she thinks in the beginning he wasn't sure we'd stick around and that she hopes he now knows we're here to stay. He said he never wants to take it for granted. He just said he appreciates that we're here and he never wants to disappoint us or leave us down. (awwwwwww, just major, major awwwwwwww)
I LOVE THAT MAN!
The end.

- Clay Aiken popped into Davio's (111 S. 17th) for dinner Monday night. The singer, who played the Mann Center last night, went for cheesesteak spring rolls and pasta bolognese and tipped very graciously. The "American Idol" alum also chose Davio's while in town for a concert last fall.
I am not surprised he is a good tipper since he is know to be so generous! Sounds like a great meal! I love hearing this little tidbits about him!

| Good review! This is the first paper to review his new show! - Quote :
- Syracuse Review
In Review Thursday, July 19, 2007Chuck Klaus Contributing writer The appearance of "American Idol" 2003 second-place winner Clay Aiken before 1,600 screaming "Claymates" - well, about 600 or so were screaming - has given your obedient servant new insight into the reviews of earlier days.
I can now imagine myself trying to review the hysteria of the bobby socks and saddle shoes set when young Frank Sinatra first came on the scene, or writing a critique of the hordes when Elvis first appeared, or the shrieks that arose when The Beatles were just getting started.
And much like those fabled critics of yore, I simply don't get it. All of this large-scale Clayemotion confounds me, I fear.
Not to unduly knock Mr. Aiken. His has an interesting voice, fairly well-used within his chosen field of pop ballad singing. There's an interesting combination of elements making up his style: a touch of blue-eyed soul, a bit of modern country, some strains of soft rock and, perhaps the most dominant influence of all, contemporary Broadway. His voice is on-pitch, he treats most of his material in a fairly spacious manner, and his work is pleasant and fairly polished, in an extremely informal way.
This ease on stage, as well as a constant barrage of self-deprecating humor, may be one of the secrets of his success. Aiken, forever putting himself down, can hardly be seen as a threat to his female audience, and they evidently love him for that. He is the beloved singing teddy bear placed near a young girl's flouncy canopied bed.
Aiken, appearing with fellow American Idolers Quiana Parler and Angela Fisher, sang a wide range of music, from covers of Dolly Parton's "Here You Come Again" to his early hit "Measure of a Man" and material from his most recent release, "A Thousand Different Ways." He generously gave his "backup singers" - really more like co-singers - solo spots and lots of room for comic byplay, and gave a really nice pep talk on behalf of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, encouraging the enthusiastic audience to become season subscribers of the SSO.
Aiken also was generous in his praise of conductor-pianist - and evidently gifted arranger - Jesse Vargas, who coordinated well and with a minimum of fuss while providing solid piano support.
Aiken had the chance to perform a ballad for which he served as lyricist, which offered the SSO's cellist, Lindsay Groves, the chance to contribute a sonorous solo. Here was one instance where the Clayemotion of the audience paused long enough to allow Aiken to truly be heard, which turned out to be a source of further Clayelation.

- Security is trying to get people to move down and Jerome just said it would be 5 or 6 minutes if I heard that right. Not sure if that means how long it will take for Clay to come out or to go through the line. Literally hundreds of people in line. Estimates are from 300-600 folks. Security said about 8,000 maybe more were in attendance tonight. He said that was a really big deal to draw that many people.
Venue near the Ohio State University. Ohio State Univeristy draws 8,000 people for their marching bands every August. It's a big deal that Clay can draw that many people.
They are lining people up for Clay to come out and the line goes from one parking lot to another parking lot and up to the building. Tons of people are in line!
CV Buscert reports that the bus line is several blocks long. And Clay comes out every night and tries to touch every one of those fans in the bus line! I love that man!

| Posted by escarm at CB about the Chautauqua concert: - Quote :
- I just wanted to mention a few things about some of the local residents. A man was talking on his cell phone during intermission and was talking about the concert. He said "I never even heard of Clay Aiken before but he is very entertaining and we are having a great time."
Then, when we were lined up at the bus waiting for Clay, many people came out of their homes to ask us what was going on. They couldn't believe that Clay would actually come out to shake/touch everyone's hand. One person didn't believe us.
Another said "I've never seen anything like this before."
Some people took a pictures of the line up.
Someone else walked down the line to see how far it went.
And one lady came off her porch and said she wanted to get in line so some fans made a space for her.
They all seemed very impressed with both Clay's show....and the way he treated his fans. It was a lot of fun watching the locals see all of this for the very first time.
I think Clay may have made some new fans that night.

- COLUMBUS REVIEW
MUSIC REVIEWPICNIC WITH THE POPS Aiken's appearance thrills female crowd Sunday, July 22, 2007 3:59 AM By Lynn Green
FOR THE DISPATCH "You don't even care what you're screaming at, do you?" Clay Aiken teasingly asked the squealing women scattered across the lawn of Chemical Abstracts Service last night.
"I could say anything." He paused. "Carburetor." Women whistled and cheered.
Aiken, the American Idol runner-up turned adult-pop star, headlined the Columbus Symphony Orchestra's Picnic with the Pops program last night.
His audience is mostly women; his singing is polished, and his attitude is upbeat. He exudes sincerity and earnestness, but, like so many pop singers, he lacks compelling originality.
Aiken specializes in adult-contemporary ballads as well as covers of hit soft-rock songs from the 1980s.
His current tour also features medleys of 1970s and '80s television themes and of "fast songs you can do with an orchestra," the latter of which included such silly gems as Sir Mix-A-Lot's Baby Got Back, Usher's Yeah, and Kenny Chesney's She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy.
He also led a singalong of Michael Jackson's The Way You Make Me Feel, asking for help with the words (which were handed out in advance).
One of Aiken's endearing traits is his gently self-depreciating humor.
"We have more gentlemen in the audience than we usually have," he observed. "Either the women in Columbus are strong-willed, or the alcohol tab is very high for the men here."
Backup singers Angela Fisher and Quiana Parler, both accomplished musicians in their own right, made strong impressions with solo numbers. Fisher got a huge cheer for Listen from the movie Dreamgirls, while Parler ended the first half of the program with a stirring performance of Faith Hill's When the Lights Go Down.
The Columbus Symphony Orchestra, unfortunately, seemed to be a minor player. The orchestral arrangements might or might not have been good, but they were drowned out in the front section of seating.
Aiken's strongest moment was his performance of Lover All Alone, for which he wrote the lyrics.

| Venue says last night concert attendence was between 12,000 to 14,000!!! Way to go Clay! I love this! - Quote :
- Good morning! hensey is in the shower and Beagle3 and I are sitting here in a daze as I try to force down some coffee. Last night's concert, in many ways, was a dream come true. And such a wonderful, uplifting thing to witness after all the tabloid crap and other slings and arrows Clay has had to endure. An absolutely huge, enthusiastic, diverse crowd. Lots of Clay fans, but I would say the vast majority of the people were the "not just us" crowd, and they were going nuts. To me, though, the funniest thing was the dumbfounded expressions on the faces of the venue staff. You'd have thought the space shuttle had landed in their "chemically contaminated field" (tm Clay HA HA!). I bet that place never saw the excitement and energy it saw last night...I feel a little sorry for them because I suspect next week's act, Sha-Na-Na, is going to be just leeetle bit of a letdown. *g* Yes, I think there were many, many Clayversions last night.
Clay was gorgeous, witty, hilarious, and sang like an angel. Even the drunken men around us were impressed. One burly guy near me, at the end of "A Thousand Days," pumped his fist in the air and yelled, "I LOOOVED THAT!" And as others have said, you could have heard a pin drop during "Lover All Alone." "Without You" and "Measure of a Man" were especially beautiful. Everyone was up and dancing during the Classics medley, and the TV medley got a great response, too (we were killing ourselves laughing at the George Jefferson walk).
As you probably heard, Clay did have an interaction with Ethel (in front of us somewhere as usual). I don't know if you could hear this, but at one point, the inevitable down-front latecomers showed up looking for their seats. Clay pointed out to them that they appeared to be taken, and then swung around, pointed at Ethel, and said, "Hey, you better move and give these people back their seats." And yes, the audience ate it up (but I think most of the Clay fans were appreciating the dig at Ethel).
I'm so impressed with the quick, good-humored, efficient way Jerome organized that bus line, which had to be more than a mile long. Really, my hat is off to him. Venue security kept walking back and forth staring in amazement, shocked at the way everyone quietly lined up with nobody the least bit out of control, and there was nothing for them to do. I KNOW they will never forget it, or us. And it's hard to believe how fast Clay goes down that line. I was amazed that I got a hand squeeze (my first since the NAT) because he was moving so quickly.

| Lord, this made me cry happy tears! - Quote :
- From the blogosphere:
Quote: The Coolest Concert I Have Ever Been To
First of all, I have been to many concerts in my day. I have seen Run DMC, Public Enemy, Big Daddy Kane, EPMD, the Beastie Boys, Technotronic, Tone Loc, Ice T, NWA, Biz Markie, Whodini, Tech N9ne and many others. On the rock side, I have seen Duran Duran, Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, Queensryche, Dream Theater and probably some others that I have forgotten.
I have pretty much enjoyed, to a greater or lesser degree, every concert that I have been to. The thing is...nothing exciting really happened at any of them. That changed last night.
Last night I took my wife to see Clay Aiken down in Columbus. I was looking forward to spending the night with my wife and seeing her happy at being able to see her idol (no pun intended). I must admit that I wasn't all that hyped at the thought of seeing the show. Now, don't get me wrong, it isn't that I didn't want to go, it's just that I wasn't enthusiastic about it. I actually think Clay is a great singer, but he isn't really my cup of tea. My wife, however, was very excited about going.
Clay came out to perform, right on time, at 8:15. He started to sing some of his regular fare and I was thinking it was sorta boring. After a couple of songs, he took a break from singing and started talking and making jokes. He joked with the crowd and made fun of the venue and I started to really get into it. He was very funny and extremely likable. No wonder my wife likes him. Anyway, I began to really get into the show at that point and I was very glad I went. Later, he made fun of himself for "not being cool enough" and playfully attempted to remedy it by singing covers of Baby Got Back, Bringing Sexy Back and, believe it or not...You Down with OPP! If you weren't there, it might sound corny, but it wasn't. It was done to be funny and it was very entertaining. He also has one hell of a voice.
After the show, Lynda and I went over to wait by the tour bus. We were simply hoping to catch a glimpse of him before he left. We had no idea what we were in for.
We found out that Clay actually likes to personally meet the fans that take the time to wait for him after his shows. What other major artist does that? The problem is that there were a lot of fans waiting for him. Apparently, a lot more than they are accustomed to dealing with. The security guards spent nearly thirty minutes discussing the logistics of the problem of how to arrange it to allow so many people to meet Clay in person. They finally had the entire crowd of remaining fans (about 2,500 people) line up single-file around the entire facility. We were lined up through the parking lots, sidewalks, lawn...everywhere! I had never seen anything like it before. All done just to make his fans happy. Wow! This alone was one of the coolest things I have ever witnessed. Please tell me one other artist to do such a thing for so many people?
Clay finally arrived, about an hour later, at the front of the line and proceeded to walk down the line of fans and shook every single person's hand. Lynda not only got to see and hear her favorite performer, but she got to shake his hand too. My wife was so happy you should have seen the look on her face. That was the coolest thing that ever happened at any concert I have been to!

fc, I will be very interested to hear this. I have thought that Clive's huge ego has a lot to do with what he has been doing to some of those on the BMG labels. I have been reading some criticisms of Kelly C., but I think she is trying so hard to establish herself and gain respect for all her talents. Instead of support and room to grow, she is being met with roadblocks. Bo wasn't given a chance AT ALL to capitalize on his AI exposure with what he does best. I think Clive pushes his position around with others who have proven themselves to be successful recording artists and performers as well....Rod Stewart and Barry Manilow, for example. I seems that they will only be allowed to record classics until they quit performing. It's way past time for Clive to fade away and let others with foresight lead and mentor. I downloaded the videos from Clay's Chautauqua show. I think they are some of the best picture and sound videos taken by a nonprofessional that I have ever seen. Nothing beats hearing him live, but the sound on these videos is fantastic. It's great to hear that he's being received so well by others who not familiar with him or who have not been following his career. He has to practically start over again with the general public and his next CD will be a very important one for the music side of his career. I'd like to see him be successful enough to tour all over the country...including the PNW!

Well, it didn't. He also does not like the song A 1000 Days . Didn't get the original he wanted on the CD. Had to fight really hard for those 4 originals. | A cover of 50s songs???? Seriously??? The songs from the mid-50s and into the early 60s were mostly the early R&R and "American Bandstand" kind of songs and are not his style. Michael Buble and Harry Connick Jr already have the 40s and early 50s standards genre cornered. Waiting three more years for his sophomore CD would have sabatoged Clay's musical career even more than it has been. I'm wondering if Clive has just as long of a memory as Clay has and this show of who is boss has something to do with Clay's respectful refusal to self-title the first CD as Clive had directed. We know that Clay has very strong opinions and is not afraid to state them. I agree that there is no good business reason for a CD of covers when it was so clear that the fans who bought those 2.7 million CDs were looking forward to something Clay would be proud to self-title. He almost quit the business? Right after the CD was released, he became very vocal about seeking a position as a talk show host. I think he would be good at it, but it will be disappointing if he stopped recording and performing. After Clive is out of the picture and Clay has been in the business for many successful years, perhaps there will be another book and that it includes a chapter on "How to survive the politics of the music business."

Maybe Clive just really did think that they would sell a boatload and he was just soooo off the mark. Maybe the order was because he really thought he was gonna make a lot of money from it. The only problem I have with giving Clive THAT benefit of the doubt is the fact that he never supported it. Not in any print media or in primetime promos. Also NO payola for radio play. So I'm not really buying that. Also when you consider that most of the songs Clive had Clay record are in his stable so he saved money there. Also no money for videos. No overseas promotion. The good news is Clay said that Clive and the label like the British, grammy winning producer they are using for the new CD. Also that Clive is happy with the direction that the CD is going in. So he is encouraged. BUT, he also told them that IF Clive mandated another covers CD or wait - he was going to wait it out. He won't do another covers CD. Yes Janice, I remember in the TV Guide Close-up interview he said "I want a talk show. Maybe I will do it that way." Everyone wondered "Do what?" I think he knew his recording career was in trouble. He wants to be in the entertainment biz, because he loves to entertain. The ladies at the M&G got the impression that he has accepted that he is NOT going to have the kind of musical career he thought he was going to have after all the early success after AI and the big sales figures. Breaks my heart. He could have, should have, had his "Breakaway". It is sad and such a waste. FWIW, Rod made it VERY clear in interviews that the last covers CD that Clive MANDATED (he used that word also) was against what Rod wanted to do. A few ladies in Chat last night have been to his concert this tour and he is NOT singing ONE song from his last CD. How awful to do this to the artists. An artist should be allowed to make the CD he/she wants to make or the label should let them go. Sky - just like Bo, Taylor couldn't make "his" CD either. Bo really was screwed over big time. At least Elliott and Con got to make the CD they wanted to make. Of course DAUGHTRY!!!!!!! got exactly what he wanted. Lucky him. Wonder who he got in bed with

So. It is what I feared. He really is on his way down. He is one of the crown jewels of the AI franchise. He should have been the male Kelly.

| Well, I am not saying he is or isn't. He is young and if the next CD can be full of really good originals and get proper promotion, things can turn around. I don't know if the sales numbers for ATDW are a reflection of "on his way down" or of people's lack of interest in the covers. I think the next CD will tell the real tale. I just was stating that the M&G ladies felt "Clay" has excepted that he is not still on that "rocket to the stars". ALSO, I do NOT believe for one minute that all the horrible tabloid crap didn't have an effect on his career. Also him being "the punchline" of so many late nite comics. It is hard to be "the next big thing" when the media is making you out as a joke. Especially a closeted gay joke. Yes, he should INDEED have been the male Kelly! He has the voice and much more presence and charisma. But, he was not seen as cool enough to be a pop star like Kelly, and he had Clive calling him the new Barry Manilow. Like the world needed a new Barry Manilow I don't even want the old Barry Manilow. No offense to any of his fans. He just ain't my thing. | |

| No, we don't need another Barry Manilow!!! Clay definitely has the voice and charisma to be a big star, what genre do you think his songs would fit? It wouldn't be rock, would it be pop? See, I classify Kelly as Rock, or at least she would want to be, I think.
Bo, really did get taken....I read where he is putting out a cd....his music this time. I hope it happens.
And why is it Chris made it so big and the others are taking longer? I love Chris Daughtry and I'm glad it worked for him, but I love Clay too....
People can listen to all kinds of music, it isn't just that one group sells and the other doesn't! Let these singers record songs that are theirs and let them shine!
