Thanks FC for sharing the photos of Eric's orientation today! It really is a beautiful campus. It is so great he has the ability to go to such a nice community college then directly transfer all his course work to the larger University.

Looks like you had a nice sunny day today! flower

Yes Luca, it was very sunny! Temps weren't bad when we were there but later in the afternoon got pretty darn hot. Had to quick water my flower buckets!

FC your son is so cute. Thanks for sharing your pics and story about college. My son has two more years and as you can imagine I am worried , worried about what he will do. He wants to go to UGA but it is very hard to get into. I am glad to hear your son's story about the route he is taking sounds like a great idea. My nephew starts college in ten days. I could weep. But he got a full scholarship to a great university. My son is smart but I don't think that will happen.

Your welcome Aerwin! Thanks! I think Eric is a cutie too! He was High Honors all senior year, half of junior year, and on and off the first two years. Didn't get him squat in the way of scholarships. Extracurriculars are a HUGE part of getting scholarships. Neither of my sons have been very involved in the extra c's or community work. Just not their thing. They are very active with their friends though Razz So if your son wants some scholarships he needs to check out what they are looking for. Tuition to the really good 4 year schools has gotten insane!! Even most of the state schools. We are looking at about 12 grand per year for Northern (about an hour away) more if he lives on campus. Columbia (downtown Chicago) we would have to take out a ton of loans Crying or Very sad It's a tough decision to make. When Eric is ready for his 3rd year we will have Justin starting college too. It boggles the mind geek

Oh, and Waubonsee is rated in the top 2% of community colleges which makes us feel really good about the boys getting to go there.

I am leaving tomorrow morning for my vacation to Nova Scotia. I am so ready and so excited. What a stressful day this has been and has left me with a killer headache. It will be gone tomorrow and I'll be enjoying my trip! I'll talk to you sometime after I return on the 25th!

New Mexico was nice. I will never drive that far in one day again though. . Out of the 690 miles, only 150 were on an interstate. It's interesting out there in small-town Texas and New Mexico. A little scary and a little sad.

Albuquerque and Santa Fe were beautiful. Couldn't do everything I personally would have liked to do, or eat where I personally would have liked to eat since we were with the kids, but it was still very nice. I am big on compromise, but the kids, not so much. But they are very fun and wonderful to be with anyway!

I started working yesterday! First time I've had a real job in almost 13 years. And it's not even really a REAL job. I'm helping a big-time chain home store after their complete renovation. It's a week and a half gig. THEN we'll see if I can get hired on a "casual" basis when they re-open. That means a very flexible schedule and not working when I don't want to. That's the only way I feel comfortable getting back into working. It makes me nervous having to be somewhere everyday!

K's birthday is Saturday and she's been sick all week. So we need to see today if we're going to postpone her bowling party.

Talk soon.

Hi Austin!

Glad you are home safe and sound! Sounds like a pretty good trip despite the traveling. I will never forget when we took a trip and had to drive thru Kansas. We went at least an hour at one point seeing NOTHING! Not a house, a farm, a shop, a gas station, a tree - nothing! My oldest son thought it was the saddest thing. Just tumbleweed. It was scary too because you felt if anything happened no one would find you for days!

Good luck with your new job! I hope it all works out just right for you!

Sorry your little one has been sick Sad I hope she has a wonderful and very happy birthday and that you don't have to cancel her party.

My oldest started his new job yesterday and my youngest got his drivers license. So a very eventful day in our family! My oldest starts college Monday - so job and college! He really is all grown up Crying or Very sad

FC - how did your son's first day of college go? Very exciting. I can't remember, is he staying at home? I know that the college is very close but I can't remember.

Well, the company asked me to stay! So I actually have a job! I had to miss orientation yesterday because my kids aren't in school until next week. DH is going to work from home tomorrow so I can go to a furniture seminar. I'll probably have the orientation next week after school starts. I can't work when the store is open until then. The grand re-opening is Saturday, (which I couldn't work anyway because we have a double bar mitzvah to go to.)

Everyone is so nice (not how I remember retail from 20 years ago.) They pride themselves on being flexible which is what I need.

Hi Austin!

Congrats on the new job!! cheers Best of luck and I hope you really enjoy it! Double Bar Mitzvah!! That sounds like a wonderful day! Congrats to those two also!

My son really enjoyed his first day - which was Monday. His clock just went off for his second day. He goes Mon. Weds. Fri. and has 4 classes. He leaves at 9:30 and gets home at 4:00. The school is 3 miles away. He lives home, at least for the first two years. We are not sure about his last two years when he is at NIU. That is about an hour away. He loves his professors and the whole vibe of college. The way they are truly treated as adults. He did have lots of homework the first day. He knows college will be a lot of homework. He was prepared for that. He already went out the first day and bought a novel to read that is for extra credit in English Lit. He has a long day today as he goes right from school to work so he will be gone from 9:30 AM until about 11:15 PM. I will miss him Crying or Very sad

In a few hours I will be taking my dad to the surgeon's office to see if the right foot is healing at all from the second surgery. Cross your fingers ladies! It has been 3 weeks since the second surgery. If it has not begun to heal yet - well, I just don't know what to think No

Have a great day everybody!! I love you

I'm glad your son is happy and doing well, FC.

I've had a weird day where maybe good karma is coming back to me or something. Today at my tennis clinic (which I've been to maybe twice this summer), my tennis coach GAVE ME a brand new tennis racquet. He had mentioned a couple months ago that he was thinking about giving me one (I kinda thought he was kidding.) I have a racquet that was an excellent one when I bought it 15 years ago. But, I'm cheap and never saw the need for another. So, today he handed me the racquet and said "try this" and asked me what I thought about it after I used it. Then he said, "It's yours." I was speechless and then finally thanked him.

I looked it up on the net when I got home. It costs $229. Although since he sells racquets and he was using that one, I know it was a demo, but still. It was sweet. I asked him if he was going to put the other one in a museum of tennis history, but he told me to keep it.

THEN, when the mail came today, the mail woman came to my door with a strangely guitar-shaped package from California. It was indeed a guitar. A really nice one. And it can plug into your computer and the frets will light up and show you where to put your fingers for each chord. It's a special teaching guitar. It comes with software and lessons, etc. It's black and very beautiful. It's MUCH nicer than the one I already have.

It was a present from Neill. Just out of the blue.

I'm waiting for someone to knock on my door with a new car or something now.

I'm very lucky.

That's wonderful Austin! Now can you send some of that luck my way? Pretty please Smile We are getting another freaking storm! Mad Gee, we haven't had one since THIS MORNING Rolling Eyes The rain and storms this summer have been insane. So, another night worrying about the pumps and flooding. We have already had the power go for a few seconds. Bad lightening AGAIN! It has been horribly hot - like 97 degrees for days and now the blower on our AC is making a terrible racket so we had to turn off the air. It's been so hot I bet you anything when I call in the morning I won't be able to get anyone out to fix it for a few days. That is what usually happens when we have a heat spell. People can't get service. AND my dad did not get good news today No

Back to you though - that really was an amazing thing for both your tennis instructor and your bro to do! New job, tennis, playing guitar - sounds like things are really exciting in your life right now! I am so happy for you! bounce

Austin, some of your good karma did come our way tonight! My BIL drove in from Ohio to bring Eric a laptop! It's a really nice Dell he had for about 18 mos. BIL decided to get something newer with a larger screen and thought it would be nice for "The College Boy" to have a laptop! BIL has always been very good to our boys. Eric has a PC on his desk already, but he was very excited when he got home from work to find a laptop. What a day for giving! Well, I gave my dad a ride to the doc's office so I did a little giving today myself Razz

Luca - My friend and I both got guitars about a year and a half ago (I bought mine with some birthday money, but it's not an expensive one), and we were really into it for awhile. I was taking lessons and then life got hectic and I haven't touched it. I don't really have musical talent, but I enjoyed it. I found it very relaxing. So, this may be a good way to get back into it. My kids are more musical then I am, so I'll let them play it too. As long as they don't smash it over each other's heads (which is always a possibility around here!)

FC, I'm so sorry your dad didn't get good news. What did the doctor say?

How's your A/C? What a pain. We had to replace our upstairs one last year - $4,500. Ouch.

Happy about the new laptop! That is so nice that your BIL brought it to him. He could have just sold it and kept the $, but he thought of Eric. I like that.

I very very slightly know Michael Dell. He lives in Austin and in fact, will more than likely be at the bar mitzvah Saturday night. My friend's husband (one of the ones giving the party) has worked for him for years. My son goes to Sunday school with his twins.

Yes, it really was nice of BIL since he sells tons of things on ebay! It's a little business of his besides his regular job.

My dad's right foot is not healing from the surgery or the diabetic ulcer. He will have to go to the wound clinic 3 times a week for 3 weeks and then have it looked at again. If he gets another infection they will amputate the foot or more like they did the left. His left stump healed perfectly, but he knows if the right foot/leg goes that is it. I don't think there is any way at his age and with his bad heart he could maneuver two artificial limbs. It's all so sad. He is just stuck in the lower level family room in the wheelchair and hospital bed. His right foot and leg is in a big cast with just toes sticking out (and they look awful) and he is not allowed to lower the right leg or put any weight on it at all. Fortunately a medic van will take him back and forth to the wound clinic. All we can do is hope and pray that some how the wound clinic can help. The will be vacuuming out the wound and putting his foot in some sort of device to give it oxygen.

Enjoy your new guitar!

Holy crap!! We have been getting hammered with storms! Tornado watches all around us! My folks got it really bad. We are about to get the third one in two hours! Thank God Eric had no classes or work today and he was home and Justin got a ride home from HS right before the storms hit because the buses have been ordered not to move and the schools are now on lock-down. Some of my daycare moms left work and went to the grade school to pick up their kids since the school was not letting them go any other way. It's been pretty scary stuff affraid Our power and pumps are holding up but some water is seeping in in one corner as all the yards are flooded. The weather this summer has just been awful Mad We did get a temp fix on the AC so we can use it. They put a loaner blower wheel in and they are special ordering one that is made for a large furnace. No sooner was the AC working then the storms hit with brown outs and hubby yells "Turn off the AC and all the lights!" not wanting to risk blowing any breakers. I had the little girls in the basement and kept them pretty calm and their moms got here early so they are gone now. THIS is what I get for wanting green grass this summer! I swear I will pray for brown grass next summer Razz This is the first summer out of 7 years since we built the house that we have not had a drought!

ETA: Damn, this one is bad!! Pray we keep power ladies or we are going to have one majorly flooded daycare Crying or Very sad

I'm watching a live press conference from Downtown Chicago and the city is a mess. They had 70 mph winds. They have flooding, power outages all over the city, power lines down, trees down on cars and houses and damage to city buildings. We are on the 4th heavy rainfall in the last 3 hours. We may get 10 inches before it is over. It is pitch black except for the endless lightening! THANK GOD my dad's appointment was yesterday and I am not trying to get him home in this mess!!

I just talked to my folks and they have water coming in through their living room windows. So do their neighbors. It is such a hard driving rain and it has just been going on for over 3 hours now. We have never had all the yards flood in the neighborhood before. It would be exciting if I didn't have to worry about another flood ruining the daycare.
