Geena Davis played the President on a recent series. But Patty Duke played the President on a FOX sitcom back in the 1980's.

Patty Duke was president of the Screen Actors Guild for several years. They actually had a situation very similar to what happened in the 2000 presidential election not too long ago. Melissa Gilbert was running for another term and Valerie "Rhoda Morgenstern" Harper was running against her. I can't remember exactly what happened but there was a controversy over some votes not being counted so the election had to be decided by the SAG version of the Supreme Court Guess who the head of that committee was? Fred Savage! He sided with Half-Pint.

Ed Asner and Ronald Reagan have also been past SAG presidents.

You want to know why I don't like John Edwards? he is a malpratice laywer. One of the very reasons healthcare costs are astronimical in this country. Torte Reform. You won't get that from him.

My favorite fictional president is David Palmer from 24.

I hope you guys in the US of A will get it right in the next election. When your economy suffers, we get badly affected. When the US economy sneezes, the rest of the world catches a cold. Very true. Since W became prez, the economy has been on a downward spiral.

aerwin, you should read John Edwards' book "Four Cases" which is about four of his most famous cases. Probably the best known is the one about the little girl whose intestines were literally ripped out when she got caught in a public swimming pool drain. Unfortunately, this accident is far from rare. In fact, James Baker's granddaughter died not too long ago from the same kind of accident.

Bob Somerby has a great website called

The Daily Howler where he has been exposing how bad the media coverage was of the Clintons and Al Gore - and Democrats in general - and how Bush and the Republicans for the most part get a free ride. Go back and read the archives from 1998-2000, it'll be a real eye-opener.

Basically, what he does is show how often the accepted media wisdom is based on shoddy reporting and an unwillingness to go against the norm and how that can distort public perception.

I reccommend The assault On Reason by Al gore. It puts everything in perspective.
Sorry I just cannot go along with John Edwards. I have some friends in the medical profession and I know how much they pay in malpratice insurance every year. That is one reason medical costs to us is so outrageous. And the bottom line is this until polticians are NOT in the pocket of lobbyists and big corporations nothing will get done. Nothing. The rich and laywers run this country. That is what is wrong right there.

That is true. And I have absolutely no idea how to fix it, because the only people who get enough money to campaign are the people in the pockets of the special interests. I'm beginning to think it would take a worker's revolution to clear this up; everybody else is just different degrees of Not As Awful As This THING Currently In the White House. And Badger, that was a very interesting read - the idea that in order to win a debate, all W had to do was not humilate himself, whereas his opponents had to dazzle and completely smoke him. It's true. I remember realizing that at the time and feeling frustrated.

I really DON'T like the direction the country has gone. However, I'm a Democrat in Texas and I don't live in Austin. I don't feel like I can do anything but read the paper, grumble, and vote.

PostSubject: Re: Celebs   Celebs - Page 6 Icon_minitimeSun Sep 23, 2007 12:53 pm

Wow. Who knew? A topic in the celebrity thread that turned all serious and gives me something to sink my teeth into.

OK, here goes. I am a liberal democrat. I don't think anyone is surprised by this revelation. I also just want Bill Clinton to run again and win, because that's when everyone was happy. HOWEVER, I really hope Hillary doesn't win the Primary because she's just way too devisive. We need someone with charisma, who people don't want to kill.

Kerry had no charisma and wouldn't freakin' fight back when those ridiculous accusations came his way. When you try to offend nobody, you wind up offending almost everyone. You look weak. That he had almost no personality was bad. That nobody knew who he was, was bad.

So, while y'all hate that he's a malpractice lawyer, John Edwards fits the bill pretty well. He's got charisma and charm. People don't hate him. Obama also would be really good. Charisma and charm there as well. People aren't gonna care about Edwards being a malpractice lawyer or look very deep. Look at the piece of shit we've got in office now, right? He ran purely on the charisma ticket. His ploy, as everyone said, was to make outrageous statements about everyone and then watch them try to explain away whatever it is he said about them, while he just smiled and looked at us with his stupid vacant eyes. What a shmuck.

I think Schwarzennegger is the only Republican I probably would have voted for. Now, there's another one. Angelides? You looked at him and saw a piece of paper. Yes, Schwarzenneger has that reputation with the ladies, but once again, like with Bill, I really don't care unless someone was forced to do something against their will. Then all bets are off.

Don't think it's based on charisma and charm and a perception? Raise your hand if you think that if Brad Pitt ran for office tomorrow he would totally win.

For some reason I just thought of Kurt Russell and think he would be a good president. For the women, I think Streep would totally kick ass. I think Oprah's too devisive, plus men hate her because they think she has too much power over their women! I think Felicity Huffman could also run and kick a little ass...and if I'm going there, might as well throw William H. Macy into the mix!

So, yeah, we need someone with Bill Clinton's charisma who makes you feel like he's got everything in hand and he's gonna fix whatever mess our current douchebag has done. We don't need ANOTHER devisive president, even if I agree with them politically. It's been really exhausting. We need someone to just go in there and make people feel better.

Food for thought: Name former GREAT presidents who could not possibly win in today's political arena. Abraham Lincoln comes to me right off the bat.

My theory always is that in the final two-person debate on TV, if you turn off the sound, and have no idea about their ideas, who would get cast to play to play the US President on some show like Dynasty or Dallas (dunno the current equivalents, but I suspect my theory still stands) is the one who wins the final election.

I do think that this way of electing started with Kennedy/Nixon, and has held true ever since., though that may just be when I started to watch) Yes, Bush was better casting, with the sound off, than Kerry.

Anybody know what I mean?

(Makes me puke, most times, but I think it is true). Carter lost his re-election to Regan for these reasons.

I agree with you about Hilary being too polarazing. Most love or hate her. I am just ambivalent about her. It bothers me that she never gives a straight answer in the debates or even on Ellen. Ans it bothers ME a great deal that John Edwards is a malpratice laywer. He is handsome and slightly charismatic. But People nned to think before they vote. A canidtes profession and who they take campaign contributions from matter. It does effect their policies.

Lincoln also had a very high-pitched speaking voice. Heck, even in the Bible, Moses had Aaron do all the talking because he had the better voice (Moses supposedly stuttered).

Nah, I just have a knack for remembering trivia.

Also, politics is one of my passions. I actually look forward to watching the conventions every four years.

FWIW, I don't agree that Brad Pitt or any other attractive celebrity type would win election easily. I know quite a few people on and off line who would vote against him even if they agreed with his stances on every issue 100% simply because he's a good-looking Hollywood actor. This would be especially if it looked like he was being promoted as someone that women would go for.

I still think Brad Pitt would win in a landslide. I do wholeheartedly agree with Frazz about turning the sound off and the person who looks most like they'd be cast as the president on like Dynasty, will be the winner.

I was gonna say George Clooney would totally win, but he's made his left-wing liberal views a little too well-known.

As for Kennedy/Nixon, they said that the people who WATCHED the debate thought Kennedy won, but those LISTENING thought Nixon won. Of course Kennedy was beautiful, but Nixon also sweat like a pig.

Badger, that is interesting info about their voices.

Interestingly enough, Kennedy was not a universally popular choice as Democratic nominee. Eleanor Roosevelt did not think he was liberal enough and Harry Truman was concerned that his father might have too much influence: "I'm more worried about the pop than the Pope."

Britney Spears lost custody of her kids to KFed.

The only good news in this is that KFed hires grown up Nannies.

Poor kids. Poor society for having to deal with these kids once they grow up.

It is still hard for me to believe what a mess Britney has become No There was a time she seemed to have her head on straight. I wonder just how bad things are going to get for her.

It is so sad about her kids. They are such adorable and beautiful little boys! I'll take them!! I did pretty good with my two boys Laughing I wish those kids the best. I can't imagine how confused they must be sometimes with all the crazy paps flashing cameras and surrounding them all the time. Must be a little scary. Mom and dad not together. Changing homes. So sad. I really hope Brit can put her life back together for the sake of those kids.

K-Fed may be a little better than Britney, but I don't get a great vibe from him. Seems like a player to me. He has kids with another actress too. In fact she was preggers with one of his kids when he married Britney. Hopefully I am wrong about him and he is a good and loving father. Maybe all that has happened with Britney has caused him to grow-up.

K-Fed at least is smart enough to realize that when the judge tells you to do something, it's a good idea to do it. Britney hasn't figured that out yet.

Britney (and other starlet-types) wearing NO UNDERWEAR so their shaved twats can be photographed. What on earth is that about? In what universe is that powerful (this is a real question...I don't get it and would like to understand).
